Galaxies

Islands of stars

A galaxy is a city of a hundred billion suns. Andromeda, the nearest big one, is already visible to the naked eye — a faint smudge two and a half million light-years away.

Why it matters

The light hitting your retina left Andromeda before humans existed. Stargazing is the only time travel that doesn't need a machine.
